The Illinois State University Academic Senate approved a policy that requires all students be enrolled in a major by 75 earned hours. If you will have completed 75 earned hours and are not enrolled in a major, this policy applies to you.
Illinois State wants to help students make progress towards graduation; gaining admission to a major is a critical step towards degree completion. Thus, upon earning 75 hours, Illinois State is now requiring that students either have a major or have on file a University Approved Plan to gain admission into a major.
All students will be sent warnings as they approach the 75 hour mark. Additionally, students not in a major by 75 hours will be notified about the formal appeal process. Students not in a major must complete the appeal in order to remain a student at Illinois State and receive financial aid. The appeal process will require students to answer several questions outlining their plan for gaining admission to a major.
Workshops will be sponsored to provide assistance with appeals and to answer questions regarding the process. Watch iCampus for workshop dates.
University College can also assist students with determining options, accessing a major, and making progress toward a degree. Please contact University College Academic Advisement at (309) 438-7604 as soon as possible to speak with an academic advisor who can help.
To appeal, students must have an intended major. If a student does not have an intended major, he/she needs to immediately begin the process of selecting a major. Visit www.findyourmajor.ilstu.edu for assistance.
To submit an appeal, students should log in to the iCampus portal. Appeal information will be in the Student Information channel of iCampus.
Students will be notified of the Appeal Committee’s decision by iCampus and U.S. mail. If a student's petition is denied, registration for the next semester will be purged and a block will be placed on the student's record for any future registration.
If a student’s appeal is denied, registration for the next semester will be purged and a block will be placed on future registration. The student may not re-enroll at Illinois State for at least one semester. After one semester, the student has the option to apply for readmission to the University.
